VMA’s Makeup Trends

MTV’s Video Music Awards is yet another important event in the A-List diaries every year, and is very much an opportunity for the ladies of the industry to pull out all the stops with their fashion and beauty choices…this years’ being no exception.

With stylists, makeup artists and hair experts falling at their feet, it is virtually impossible for these ladies to not look their best at big industry events (although you do get the odd faux pas now and again!). Given my obsession with makeup and all things beauty, I am a sucker for constantly browsing photos online of the makeup trends from each year at these sorts of red carpet occasions.

This year seemed to be very much about more of a natural look, with glowing skin, voluminous lashes (with a little help from falsies for some of them), and any colour being mainly on the lips, although not something they all opted for.

Ellie Goulding’s look was absolutely gorgeous, with completely flawless skin, gorgeous fluttery corner lashes and a ‘her lips but better’ hint of colour on the lips.

Rita Ora went for a similar look and had equally glowing skin; however I wasn’t a fan of her nude lip. I felt the shade was a little too light and left her looking a little washed out.

Katy Perry also went much more au natural, and rocked that beautiful ivory skin of hers to perfection, with the addition of gorgeous full lashes for that little something extra.

Ciara was a bronzed goddess with her beautiful skin tone, subtle smoky eye and flattering nude pink shade on the lips.

Taylor Swift was another to make the most of her porcelain skin tone and had her signature red lip as always. She opted for a slightly darker shade of red than normal though, but this was equally as flattering as her usual tone.

My favourite look of the evening though was that of Selena Gomez, with her slightly more natural take on a vampy look. I love cats eye liner flicks anyway, but thought this really suited her and looked great with her subtle contouring and deeper lipstick shade. She was the epitome of sophistication and I loved that she went a little more grown up with her look, managing to pull off a little more detail than the other ladies sported, without looking too done up.

These ladies have clearly been taking very good care of their skin to be able to rock such natural looks, which I predict will be a big trend for AW13. Makeup can hide a multitude of sins, but the key to achieving that is, and always will be, good skincare. So take a leaf out of their book ladies and get yourself into a good routine now, especially with the winter months fast approaching. Make as much effort as possible to cleanse, tone and moisturise daily, ensuring you select products appropriate to your skin type. It’s always nice to give your skin a little extra pampering every so often too though, so why not book yourself in for a little facial treat every month or two.
